The short answer

For sport and long outdoor days the strongest formulation is a very water resistant emulsion at 88 out of 100, because it resists both sweat sheeting and the friction of clothing and kit. Sticks score 82 and are the best answer for noses, ears and cheekbones where sweat runs. The category averages 82. Aerosol sprays score 60 for the same reason they do elsewhere: convenience does not produce a film thick enough to match the tested claim. Altitude and reflection raise exposure sharply, which is why hill and snow days need the same discipline as a beach.

Why sport is a different problem from swimming

Water resistance and sport durability overlap but are not the same requirement. Still immersion removes a film by dissolution and sheeting. Sport removes it by sweat, by friction against clothing, straps, helmets and packs, and by the wearer wiping their own face. A formulation can pass a water immersion test and still be gone from a forehead an hour into a run.

Sport also changes the exposure picture. Long days outdoors mean cumulative exposure at the times of day most people avoid. Altitude increases ultraviolet intensity meaningfully with every few hundred metres of ascent. Snow reflects a very high proportion of incoming UV, water reflects a smaller but significant amount, and both mean exposure arrives from below as well as above. Under a hat brim is not a protected zone on a snow day.

The third distinctive factor is sting. A formulation that runs into the eyes with sweat gets wiped off the forehead, and the forehead is then unprotected for the rest of the session. Sting resistance is not a comfort feature in this category. It is a protection feature, because it determines whether the film stays where it was put.

The stick at 82 scores high for a format that cannot cover a body. That is deliberate. For the specific areas that burn during sport, the high points of the face and the back of the neck, it delivers a thick, durable film exactly where sweat does most damage.

What to look for

  • Very water resistant on the label. The eighty minute criterion is the closest available proxy for sweat durability.
  • Photostable filters for full day exposure. A hill day is six hours of continuous UV, which is where filter stability stops being theoretical.
  • A stick for the high points of the face. Nose, ears, cheekbones and the back of the neck take a disproportionate share of the exposure and the sweat.
  • Lip protection with SPF. Lips have no melanin defence worth the name and are commonly forgotten on hills and slopes.
  • A reapplication plan that fits the activity. If you cannot stop for two hours, apply more generously at the start and carry a stick for the exposed points.

What to avoid

  • Light daily face fluids as your only protection for a long day. They are built for comfort under makeup, not durability under sweat.
  • Sprays in wind. The plume goes downwind and the film that lands is thin and streaked. Wind also removes the sensation of heat that would otherwise warn you.
  • Forgetting reflected UV. Snow, water and pale rock all send ultraviolet upward onto the underside of the chin, the nose and the ear lobes.
  • Judging exposure by temperature. A cold, clear day at altitude can carry a far higher UV index than a warm, hazy one at sea level. The World Health Organization guidance on the UV index is the reference worth learning.
  • Powders and wipes as a serious top up. They deliver a fraction of a proper dose and give a false sense of having reapplied.

Why does my sunscreen sting my eyes when I sweat?

Is sport sunscreen different from normal sunscreen?

Can I reapply sunscreen without stopping my activity?
